Before you begin
- Choose nursery, transplanting or direct seeding for local conditions
- Repair bunds and level the field before establishment
- Use clean seed and a locally recommended variety
Your field timeline
Before nursery or sowing
1. Choose the method
Match establishment to labour, water and field conditions.
- Choose transplanted, direct-seeded or locally recommended method
- Level the field and repair bunds and inlets
- Plan weed control before the crop is established
Watch for: Uneven land that creates deep and dry patches
Nursery, sowing or transplanting
2. Establish the crop
Aim for an even, healthy stand.
- Use healthy seedlings or good-quality seed
- Follow local seedling age, spacing and sowing guidance
- Keep water shallow and controlled during establishment
Watch for: Weak seedlings, buried plants or washed seed
Early growth to active tillering
3. Build tillers
Support roots while controlling weeds and water.
- Check plant stand and weed pressure
- Use soil-test nutrient recommendations
- Where suitable, allow brief drying rather than keeping deep water continuously
Watch for: Yellow patches, persistent deep water or cracked dry soil
Panicle initiation to flowering
4. Protect panicle and flowering
Avoid moisture stress in this critical period.
- Maintain reliable root-zone moisture
- Keep bunds and channels functional
- Scout for insects, disease and lodging risk
Watch for: Drying at flowering, damaged leaves or uneven heading
Grain filling to maturity
5. Finish and harvest
Let grain fill, then prepare the field for harvest.
- Maintain moisture during early grain filling
- Where locally recommended, stop irrigation before harvest so the field firms
- Harvest at proper grain maturity and dry produce safely
Watch for: Late flooding, shattering, birds and lodging
Watering: read the field, not just the calendar
- Establishment
Seedlings or seedbed need moisture but water is pooling deeply
Keep shallow, controlled water and drain excess.
- Tillering
Ponded water has disappeared but soil remains moist
Where locally suitable, use controlled wetting and drying instead of permanent deep water.
- Panicle and flowering
Root zone is drying or crop begins to roll
Do not allow stress; restore controlled moisture.
- Before harvest
Grain is maturing and the local harvest window is near
Stop irrigation only at the locally advised time so the field can firm.
Local conditions come first
Rainfall, soil, sowing date, crop variety and irrigation method can change every recommendation. Use this page as a field checklist, then confirm rates, dates and treatments with your local KVK or agriculture officer. Always follow the product label for crop-protection inputs.
