Corn field guide

Corn responds strongly to a uniform stand, open drainage and timely moisture around flowering.

Before you begin

  • Use a locally recommended sowing window and hybrid
  • Start with a soil test and a clear drainage plan
  • Keep seed, fertiliser and irrigation channels ready before sowing

Your field timeline

Before sowing

1. Plan the field

Set up the crop for even emergence.

  • Prepare a well-drained seedbed and clear runoff channels
  • Use soil-test results to plan nutrients
  • Confirm local spacing, seed rate and sowing window

Watch for: Low spots where rainwater can stand

Sowing day

2. Sow into moisture

Aim for even depth and good seed-to-soil contact.

  • Sow in lines at the locally recommended depth and spacing
  • Keep rows visible for weeding and irrigation
  • Give only enough irrigation to establish the crop if soil is dry

Watch for: Seed placed too deep or in waterlogged soil

Emergence to knee-high

3. Build a uniform stand

Check germination early and keep competition low.

  • Walk rows and mark gaps or weak patches
  • Remove early weeds and keep drains open
  • Apply nutrients only at locally recommended stages and rates

Watch for: Uneven colour, standing water or wilting

Tasseling and silking

4. Protect flowering

This is a sensitive water stage.

  • Check root-zone moisture frequently
  • Irrigate before visible stress where rainfall is insufficient
  • Scout for insects and disease symptoms while walking the field

Watch for: Rolled leaves, delayed silks or water sitting around roots

Grain filling to maturity

5. Fill grain and harvest

Maintain crop health, then let the field dry safely.

  • Avoid prolonged moisture stress during grain filling
  • Reduce unnecessary irrigation as the crop approaches maturity
  • Harvest when the variety reaches field maturity and grain is suitable

Watch for: Lodging, ear damage and late waterlogging

Watering: read the field, not just the calendar

  • After sowing

Seed zone is dry or crusting

Use light, even irrigation; do not flood.

  • Knee-high growth

Root-zone soil is drying and leaves lose firmness

Restore moisture and keep drainage channels open.

  • Tasseling and silking

No useful rain and soil moisture is declining

Prioritise irrigation; avoid both drought and standing water.

  • Grain filling

Crop shows stress before grain is filled

Provide timely moisture, then taper near maturity.

Local conditions come first

Rainfall, soil, sowing date, crop variety and irrigation method can change every recommendation. Use this page as a field checklist, then confirm rates, dates and treatments with your local KVK or agriculture officer. Always follow the product label for crop-protection inputs.
